Ecological restoration is the science and art of returning a parcel of land to the ecological role that it played in the regional landscape before it was altered by man.  The Society for Ecological Restoration defines it as,

The process of intentionally altering a site to establish a defined, indigenous, historic ecosystem.  The goal of this process is to emulate the structure, function, diversity and dynamics of the specified ecosystem.

There is no magic to the restoration process, just lots of work and conscientiously applied knowledge.  First, we make a careful assessment of the degraded ecosystem.  We analyze the site’s history using data records maintained by the appropriate Natural Features Inventory, look at how the land surrounding the site is now being used and how it has changed over time.  We study the site’s plants, soils, topography, hydrology, and everything else that has a bearing on the ecological function of the site.  We look at nature preserves and historical records of pre-settlement conditions for similar sites.  We discuss priorities with the client to determine the project’s goals, and develop a restoration plan that will guide each step of the project from site preparation through implementation, management and monitoring of the “finished” product.  We may consult with engineers, surveyors, wildlife biologists and other professionals, depending on the size and scope of the project.
